Welcome to CY Aviation and Boone Municipal Airport
TThe “dog days” of summer are upon us here in Central Iowa...do you know where that phrase came from? According to Factmonster.com: “Dog days is the name for the most sultry period of summer, from about July 3 to August 11. Named in early times by observers in countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, the period was reckoned as extending from 20 days before to 20 days after the conjunction of Sirius (the Dog Star) and the sun.”
Needless to say, this kind of weather also coincides with high density altitude, so before you head out for that flight breakfast, fly-in, family or class reunion, be sure to do a thorough weight and balance check and refer to your pilot's POH to be certain your airplane will perform as expected. And while Iowa’s most tornado-prone months are typically April and May, mid-summer can spawn it’s fair share of severe weather as well. So, don’t be caught off-guard and be sure to get a thorough weather briefing as well.
And speaking of fly-ins and breakfasts, summer is the perfect time of year to take in one of the many flying activities offered around the state and region. Please visit the Iowa Office of Aviation's calendar of events for a listing of family-friendly flying events to enjoy.
The Boone Municipal Airport ramp renovation project is nearly complete. New amenities now include a yard light at the fuel pumps (which were moved farther away from the hangar), newly-decorated fuel pumps, new security fencing with a drive-through security gate, new concrete and drains in front of the hangar walk-through door. The fuel pumps are now back up and functioning. An additional hangar is currently under construction as well. You can take a look at the improvements via the Boone Airport “Skycam” on this home page.
As always, many local and transient aircraft, skydiving activities and National Guard operations continue taking advantage of some very pleasant summer weather, so come out and watch a variety of aircraft using the Boone airport. And, please stop on in for a fresh cup of coffee, a cold beverage and some “hangar flying” with local pilots.
CY Aviation's Cherokee Archer was recently fitted with some exciting new avionics, including a Garmin 430 GPS and Aspen Pro 1000 Primary Flight Display. Give a call to schedule some time in it and check it out! GPS is the future of general aviation, so now is a great time to hop on the GPS bandwagon.
For active fliers, CY Aviation offers flight training, biennial flight reviews, IFR refresher training and TOL currency. Be sure to let us know if we can assist you with your currency requirements. And if your plane needs a little mid-summer mechanical TLC, Bob Jones, our mechanic, is here to assist.
Lastly, don't forget that special aviator on your shopping list... CY Aviation gift certificates are perfect for all holidays and birthdays. Since it’s never too early for holiday shopping, a gift certificate would make a wonderful gift for your favorite aviator. Perhaps a new headset is in order for that special pilot on your shopping list... We have an assortment of pilot supplies available, so give us a call if you are looking for something special.
From all of us at CY Aviation, stay cool, stay safe, and keep the blue side up!
